02Aug Social Media Widget
You know… There are a boatload of “Share” plugins out there for WordPress. There are also a couple of “Follow Me” type options, but none of them did exactly what I wanted. I just wanted a sidebar widget that listed individual icons for the following options that I have, namely Twitter, Facebook, and RSS, so I went about building a widget that did exactly that with as little click-through as possible to get it set up.
Current Version: 2.6
Due to overwhelming support on this project and the massive influx of e-mails and comments on my website, I’m going to ask that everybody now move all comments, requests, questions, and all other inquiries to my newly set up forum system.
http://forums.idontlikethisgame.com/viewforum.php?f=3
Only here will I answer requests for support.
I will update my widget readme to reflect this change to point everybody to the forums.
Thanks!
Brian

Hello, after installing your Social plugin, I now get this error: Warning: call_user_func_array() [function.call-user-func-array]: First argument is expected to be a valid callback, ‘social_widget_css’ was given in /usr/www/ourdomain/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 339
do you have any idea how to fix this?

May 27th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
Hi Chase:
What version of WordPress are you currently running and how exactly did you install the plugin? This is the first error like this I’ve heard of. If you uninstall the plugin does this error go away?
Hi Fernando:
I will make note of that and add it to v.1.2! Keep your eyes open for that in a couple of weeks. How is it working for you other than that?
May 27th, 2010 at 7:43 pm

Fernando: I’m glad you like it! Please follow me on Twitter @brianfreytag to keep up to date on the updates to this widget. I have every intention of adding Orkut in my next update (1.2) which I plan on releasing next week.
Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming support for this project!

We are facing an issue, once we put the feed URL and save, it then deletes the url from the field, but all others remain…
May 31st, 2010 at 5:28 pm
We had the same issue with the Feed url as well. Using WP 3 RC1.
The main problem I have is that the icons do not show up (blue question mark). When I copy the image link I get this:
http://assurehsc.ie/blog/wp-content/plugins/C:/Inetpub/vhosts/assurehsc.ie/httpdocs/blog/wp-content/plugins/images/default/32/facebook.png
Which doesn’t look 100%.
Any thoughts?

Steve:
You shouldn’t have to modify ANY php to use this. When you add the widget to your sidebar, it should give you options. Change the URLs in the boxes and click Save at the bottom. This should change the URL on the site. If you modify the PHP files, those modifications are going to get jacked up if you upgrade my product.
Lindsay:
Thank you! I’m glad it’s working great for you! Keep it up-to-date and watch the changelogs to see some of the new cool things I’m going to be adding to it! BTW, you have a really nice looking website. A lot of people can take notes from what you’re doing.
William, Niall:
Reproduced, confirmed. I will patch the Feed URL issue next week. Although the feed URL doesn’t show up properly in the widget control panel it should still be right on your website. I looked at your site William and see that it’s pointing to your Feedburner URL.
Niall:
This appears to be some sort of issue with the plugin finding your plugin directory. This is more than likely because of a conflict between my plugin and your Windows server configuration or blog configuration. I will look in to this, but there is no reason for it to be searching C:\inetpub…\….
If anybody else has heard of this before, let me know.

I have the blue outline around the links. Which tag should I be editing in my css in order to remove the blue outline around the icons?
Thanks!
June 2nd, 2010 at 10:58 am
Why arent you using the standard list tags () to wrap your widget? Right now its breaking the widget standard and then of course my theme unless i make a completely separate sidebar just for it. =/
June 2nd, 2010 at 5:36 pm
Mark,
The reason I didn’t use list tags is because I originally built this widget for a private project I was working on and needed it to function like I have it. I put it on wordpress.org because I don’t have a personal svn server so using wp’s one seemed like the best idea, but I had no idea itd be this popular so I didn’t foresee that to be a problem.
You’re right of course, but I don’t see me changing that for a few weeks because so many things can break (especially on my private project). I’ll wrap it in list tags asap.
June 3rd, 2010 at 6:42 am
bummer…just upgraded to 1.2.2 and now my icons run vertically down the left side of the widget…is there a place I can download the last version or do you have any ideas? thanks!
June 3rd, 2010 at 8:42 am
Hi Jeff,
Sounds like a CSS issue. I’ve uploaded a slightly different css file that hopefully takes care of this. I’ve simply added !important behind where I call the social media buttons inline.
This occurred when I changed the thing from simply using a div to wrapping the widget in list tags.
Try upgrading to 1.2.3 which should be available now.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/social-media-widget/
June 3rd, 2010 at 8:47 am
would you be able to post a copy of the old css- changes broke what was perfect in my website
Thanks for a great widget
June 3rd, 2010 at 8:48 am
Jay,
Try upgrading to 1.2.3. Hopefully that fixes some of your problems.
Or:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/social-media-widget/download/
You can download 1.2.1 which is before I “fixed” it thanks to Mark’s complaining about “breaking standards” and shit.
June 3rd, 2010 at 8:53 am
for whatever reason 1.2.3 is the issue. I will sort out what I need from the older files. The “Broken Standards” worked perfectly for me. I am glad your released this. This widget simply does the job well.
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:07 am
lol…thanks dude!
June 3rd, 2010 at 9:12 am
ps…same issues with 1.2.3 as well…going to use 1.2.1 for now! thanks!
June 3rd, 2010 at 10:31 am
Everyone upgrade to 1.2.4. This will hopefully fix problems for you all.
Sorry, but I had to fix it being out of widget standard.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:37 am
brilliant! 1.2.4 works like a charm…thank you!
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:40 am
w0000000000.
Note: I’m not touching this thing again for a few days. Social Media Widget is stable at last.
Thanks for the update Jeff.

June 15th, 2010 at 7:17 am
Hey RajeeV,
I’m glad you like it! Please go to the WordPress plugins page for this widget and give it 5 stars! The more ratings is gets the higher in the search results it’ll get (if they search by rating).
I appreciate all of the support I’ve been getting for this plugin!
June 15th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
Thank you for a great plugin. I wonder if there is a fix so the icons look good on IE?
June 15th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Yes – and I released it.
Unfortunately, you’re going to lose transparencies with IE. I wanted to take a Javascript-free approach to this, and, unfortunately, Internet Explorer (even IE8) does a terrible job with transparent pngs when using the CSS opacity methods. (filter:alpha(opacity=xx);) I’ve removed this, and now the icons look good, but there is no longer any hover effect.
As soon as IE9 is launched and truly supports CSS3, the opacity will once again work with the “opacity” CSS call.
Hope this helps Yolanda.
If you like this plugin, please rate it!
June 15th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Thank you so much for fixing this.
5 stars for sure!
June 15th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
Thanks a lot! Appreciate the feedback.
June 17th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
Hey Brian! I love your plugin and really want it in my sidebar but it will not display for me. I’ve installed it and changed the links to mine, saved it and everything but it does not show up at all. Any ideas?
June 17th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
@Denise
I have two questions
1) What version of WordPress are you using?
2) Have you modified the Sidebar code for that theme?
I was able to install and properly activate the widget using your theme in 2.9.2, but I didn’t do any modifications to the theme.
I would first suggest Deactivating, Deleting, and Reinstalling the widget. Then I would look into issues with your theme that might cause this widget (which uses more recent functions and methods and I can’t guarantee works with anything less than 2.9.1) to not display.
June 17th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Hello,
I installed the plugin, set all the URLs, but the plugin is not displaying on my site. Its in the widget section, but the area is blank when you view the page. I checked to make sure I wasn’t missing any configurations, but I don’t see any.
Can you assist?
Thanks,
Crystal Watts

June 17th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
Apparently this is something that’s starting to happen on new install for some reason.
Try changing your No Follow to “off” and see if that fixes it.
June 17th, 2010 at 3:13 pm
Also note that I have not been able to duplicate this on 3 2.9.2 installs or 2 3.0 installs, so I’m not sure what you’re doing to cause this.
For future reference, if you need help please provide the following details:
1) Your WordPress Plugin (this plugin doesn’t support anything below 2.9.1)
2) Your Theme (and where I can download it to test it)
3) How you installed the plugin (via Admin Panel installer or uploaded directly to web server)
4) What troubleshooting steps you’ve taken? (deactive/reactive, delete/reinstall, etc…)
I can’t fix my code if I have no idea what might be breaking it, so if you can give me as much detail as possible I’ll take a look at it.
June 17th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Thanks for the great plugin, is there any way to align the icons? Id like to have them be centered.
June 18th, 2010 at 12:15 am
Hello OfficeSupplyGeek:
You can easily align your icons using simple CSS.
Open your theme’s style.css file and add the following:
.socialmedia-buttons {
text-align: center;
}
Give that a go and and see if that does what you need it to.
June 18th, 2010 at 1:26 am
cool plugin!! i’m using it!
June 18th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
Brian, That worked perfectly, thanks!

what is the command for hard coding this into my template on the side bar.
I want to kill my social bar and replace it with this one.
256studio dot com
June 27th, 2010 at 10:14 pm
need it too
June 27th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
Currently, this widget does not support the ability to hardcode the widget into your theme. It's a sidebar widget that only works on widget-enabled themes.
June 29th, 2010 at 11:15 am
Hi,
Was wondering if you could help me figure out why I always get a slightly larger gap between 1st and 2nd icons.
Also I can't seem to get the hover feature working, I'm sure I have to change some part of my css, not sure what though,
Website: http://www.isocnews.com/wordpress
THANKS
June 29th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
It's because you're using your own icons and not mine. Revert back to my icons and that gap will go away.
Hover doesn't work in IE. If you hardcoded the opacity as 1 and the visibility as :visible then you've destroyed what I've done.
Revert back to the default code that I built and then all of these problems will go away.
July 1st, 2010 at 4:02 pm
I love your social widget plugin. However, I'm still getting icons on my website even though I have deleted the URLs? Also, is there a way to space out the icons.
Thanks!
July 1st, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Hi Chuck,
Make sure you are using version 1.3.1. There was an issue with 1.2.8 if you are trying to update using Internet Explorer.
Try using Firefox or Chrome to remove the links and see if that works.
You can also increase the spacing by adding the following to your style.css file:
.socialmedia-buttons img {
margin-right: {insertnumber}px;
}
By default, SMW margin-right is 10px, so if you want greater spacing, replace {insertnumber} with 15, 20, 25, etc.. until you're happy with the spacing.
July 1st, 2010 at 10:43 pm
I cannot get the plugin to work, when I drag the widget over to the sidebar in the arras theme it seems like Its good. It is not showing up on the website, and when I go back to the widget editing page, it is no longer in the sidebar. THoughts??
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:53 am
I'm currently usine the latest version as well as using Firefox and Chrome browser. I still can't get the spacing change. I went to the style.css file and made the change to the number and it didn't work. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Chuck
July 3rd, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Thanks for the widget…saved me a ton of time. Would be nice if you can add flickr & delicious icons to the widget in the future version.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Chuck,
Unless I can see my widget on your site, I won't be able to diagnose or fix any graphical issues. I need to be able to use Firebug to play with the CSS to make it look right and then give you the code for that change.
If you have the widget on your site somewhere, please throw me a URL (you can e-mail it to brifreytag_at_gmail.com if you don't want it up here).
July 6th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Make sure you've downloaded version 1.3.1, and then make sure after you drag it to the sidebar and change the URLs, that you are clicking “Save” at the bottom of the widget control panel.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
I'll throw out 1.4 this week with Flickr and Delicious included! Thanks for the donation. I greatly appreciate it!
July 6th, 2010 at 2:49 pm
Really like this plugin, works like a charm. Any chance of some Vimeo Support?
Tom
July 6th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
I'll add that to the request docket. I'm not sure I've seen Vimeo in any of the icon packs that I use (though I have created a few of my own to add support in the past) so I will look in to that.
Thanks for using the plugin!
July 6th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Chuck,
Try doing the following:
.socialmedia-buttons img {
margin-right: 10px !important;
}
There is likely an img { margin: 0 !important; } somewhere causing all images to have the style.
This should fix it!
Yaaay!
July 6th, 2010 at 10:06 pm
Brian,
That did it! You're the MAN.
Thanks,
Chuck
July 7th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Make sure you upgrade to 2.0! Vimeo support is included.
July 8th, 2010 at 1:54 am
Love it.. thanks
I hope theres a way for the icons not to retain the quality when the scale, like coding 2 images: one for the original size and one hovered. Just a thought if in case you make an update.
Nice work!
July 8th, 2010 at 2:16 am
Hi Cindy,
I appreciate the feedback, but that solution isn't really feasible with my anti-javascript sentiment with this widget. I'm using CSS3 animations only. Besides, I can't imagine the size of this widget if I had to have multiple sizes on top of the multiple sizes on top of the multiple icon packs.
Also, replacing the images with a larger version would change the size of the container which could easily break a theme when a person hovers. The way the CSS works, it will overlap any elements instead of resizing them.
I appreciate your comments and I do apologise for the image quality degradation in the scaling, but that's the best I can do using CSS3 at this time. I have noticed, however, that if you use the “Combo” animation, and set the opacity down to 80% or lower, it tricks the eye into thinking that the image quality improves by increasing the opacity.
There is also quality differences in different browsers. Because the webkit methods (-webkit) are somewhat superior to those of Mozilla (-moz), all of these animations are far more visually appealing in Webkit-based browsers such as Chrome or Safari. They're terrible in Opera and only scale works in Internet Explorer 8.
Thanks!
July 8th, 2010 at 11:32 pm
Sorry. Your plugin return this value: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1081060 bytes) in /home2/op0335t/public_html/wp-includes
July 9th, 2010 at 2:37 am
Hate to break this to you, but that has nothing to do with my plugin. That is an issue with your PHP memory limit. You probably have too many plugins, applications, or too many php scripts running at one time, and my plugin was the last straw and that made it go over. Either change this through your php.ini (if you have control over your server) or follow the directions here:
http://calcuttaseo.com/wordpress-fix-fatal-erro...
If you have control of your php.ini, find “memory_limit” (mine is on line 457 of 1716) and set that to 128MB.
32MB for a PHP memory limit is fine if you're only running one PHP-using application, but if you're running WordPress with a boatload of scripts, forums, drupal, etc… all running off of PHP, those are pulling from your memory limit.
For example, my server, which is hosting this site and 3 other live websites as well as forums and a bunch of other crap (4 or 5 development wordpress and drupal and phpbb installs) has never had this error because I have a 128MB memory limit.
If you're using a cheap-o hosting service, I'd consider switching. They often try to save money (by calling it savings to you) by lowering these settings in their server so that people can't run a crapload of stuff.
Thank you for attending sysadmin 101.
July 9th, 2010 at 2:38 am
Also, this error makes it look like the MINIMUM memory limit you could run is 96ishMB.
I would definitely up that to 128MB min or try to get rid of some of the crap you have running on your server.
July 11th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Hello, I'm testing your plugin on my site that is under construction. ( really nice graphics and easy, good job! )
I have a question and i need your help:
take a look at my site; http://www.elcambiomillonario.com
and tell me how do i manage to make the icons be in 2 rows or 3 depending on the size. Right now is one sinlge column at it does not work for me.
Can this be done?
thanks
July 11th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
Hello Luisbillionaire,
You have a lot of funky stuff going on with the CSS of your theme product, and I'm not entirely sure you're formatting your widget areas properly.
You can make them go inline, by getting rid of IMG { display: block; } You don't want to give images that display type.
Or you can do:
.socialmedia-buttons img { display: inline; }
this will set them up side-by-side.
Then you need to do
.socialmedia-buttons {
width: 273px;
}
This will align the widget's width with the menu above it.
Your theme has a lot of issues that need to be worked out to properly use widgets without doing hacky style stuff like this. I have a feeling many of the widgets that you hope to use will end up suffering the same why mine did with your theme.
Did you know that I do freelance WordPress work?
I'm very cheap and I do kickass stuff with WordPress!

Thanks for the support.
July 15th, 2010 at 8:23 am
could you add a yelp symbol , pls?
July 15th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I will add Yelp to my queue and try to get it in the next version.
July 16th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
Thanks for adding foursquare and responding so quickly! Keep the updates coming! Let me know when Yelp is added as well. Take care and thanks for all the hard work.
July 17th, 2010 at 12:26 am
You are most welcome.
As I told Tustor, I will attempt to get Yelp added to version 2.2 in the near future (I generally like to wait at least a week).
I also will try to get a few other ones added in there, or maybe add a new icon pack!
July 19th, 2010 at 6:40 am
Anyway you'd consider adding a Blogger profile icon link?
July 19th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
I'd love to. I'll try to get that in version 2.2 as well.
If you like this plugin, please go to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/social-medi... and sign in and Rate it 5 stars and indicate if it works or doesn't work for you.
Thanks!
July 19th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
Thanks Brian, I'll install it tonight, try it, and rate it.
July 20th, 2010 at 3:01 am
Everything works just fine. Just some styling questions for you Brian.
Which line do I adjust in the CSS to left-align the icons with my other link indentations? Which line would I adjust to add a space bewteen “Follow Me” and the icons?
http://pharmazyservices.com/
Thanks again!
July 20th, 2010 at 12:49 pm
Hi Guzzo,
Go ahead and add:
.socialmedia-buttons {
margin-left:15px;
}
to your styles.css file.
This should align them with the rest of your sidebar widgets.
July 20th, 2010 at 3:07 pm
Yelp is included in 2.2. Please upgrade!

I tried Your plugin and really liked the HTML5 effects. Unfortunately I would need the plugin in an area of my template that is not my sidebar : ) Would love that in the future.
Good job by the way!
July 20th, 2010 at 9:18 pm
Thanks for the kind words.
There is a reason this is called Social Media WIDGET as opposed to Social Media PLUGIN. This was designed from the start to be a simple sidebar widget. BTW: With a little know-how, you can add a widget area ANYWHERE on your site.
I truly did not foresee this plugin becoming this popular this quickly. I knew there was a niche I was filling with this product, but I didn't realize how large it was.
I suppose I can look in to this for you and see if I can come up with an efficient way to add this functionality.
July 20th, 2010 at 9:54 pm
Until I do this, which I may not, you can go ahead and add a widget area to a different spot of your website.
Add the following to your functions.php file in your theme directory:
if ( function_exists('register_sidebar') ) {
register_sidebar(array(
'name'=>'Social Media Widget Area',
'before_widget' => '<li id=”%1$s” class=”widget %2$s”>',
'after_widget' => '</li>',
'before_title' => '
',
'after_title' => '
'));
}
Then add the following to the template file where you wish to add the widget:
<div class=”smw-placeholder”>
<ul>
<?php if ( !function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(“Social Media Widget Area”) ) : ?>
<li>This is where the social media widget will go</li>
<?php endif; ?>
</ul>
</div>
This will, by default (until you add the widget), show the text “This is where the social media widget will go” which you obviously don't want. So then after you see this text, go to your Admin panel, go to Appearance -> Widgets. You will see a new Sidebar on the right called “Social Media Widget Area.” Drag and drop the Social Media Widget widget to that sidebar, and configure it. After you save it, you go back to your site and you should see the widget there.
Unfortunately, it'll look funny so you'll have to use some CSS to get it to look right (I use the Firebug Firefox plugin to troubleshoot CSS).
If you don't know PHP/HTML/CSS – Don't do this.

Thanks again Brian, worked like a charm. That also was a quick update to add the Blogger profile link. Let me see if I can go donate a few dollars to the cause.

In short: no.
This is a widget, not a full-blown plugin.
I am looking into expanding it beyond its original intention, but I don't foresee that happening any time in the very near future.

Hello Tester75,
I've never heard of these social media sites. Clearly they're based in Germany, und mein Deutch is nicht gut, so I have no idea what those sites are all about.
I understand, thanks to my friend Google Translate, that there are minor differences between the three, but I'm not 100% sure of the popularity of these sites.
Do you have any member statistics that I might go on?
If I further understand these sites I might be more inclined to add them to the next version.
Thanks.

It's my pleasure Guzzo. I'm always happy to help! Thank you for the donation! It is greatly appreciated and helps support the development of this widget.
I spend countless hours outside of my normal work life (where I'm web developer for a large US University) to develop this widget and to provide support for individuals like yourself. Donations even if they are a buck or two definitely help to make me realize that my efforts are worthwhile and appreciated.
Thank you!

Hi, I love your widget for the few sites I run.
I was trying to customize it a bit, to add digital-tunes.net, a music store online, with social media integrated in to it, so it almost qualified to be in your line up.
I tried the easy way to just change a logo out and put in a link and it all looks OK until I hoover over it and the original site's text appears.
Any chance to either get a blank field for 1 custom link, or help with getting the text out?
It's on a wordpress site, using latest versions of widget/wp/firefox
Thank you for all the great work and your time.

Link to site, and do you have an icon?
July 21st, 2010 at 9:59 pm
I am considering the best way to create a custom link or two. I'm not entirely sure when I'll be able to get this done since I develop this widget in my limited free time.
In the mean-time, do you have an Icon for digital-tunes.net? It has to be at least 128×128 pixels so that I can modify it to fit into all of the icon themes.

Icons have to be at least 128×128 pixels so I can easily modify them to fit into the icon themes.

Here is a DT button, I really appreciate this, will contribute as soon as my budget allows.
On a side note, we use soundcloud a lot for moving music around, it might be the biggest music community right now. Our website has many links already to it, but that would be another one for the future I can recommend.
I will get a button for that site too proactively in case you need it.

I will be out of town for the weekend and won't have any time to do this during that time, but I will try to get this out early next week.
Thanks for the icon.

I like it.. but I'm tired of hacking it with every update. Would you please add a few custom fields that will stay the same with updates and add Tumblr. The Apple App store has a good icon, but there are others. I will seriously donate if you added those (tumblr and a few custom fields that won't change with updates.) here's a link to a 32 tumblr icon I use.

Great widget! Could be useful SlideShare icon too!
July 28th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
That is one of the things I'm looking at doing for the next update as a matter of fact.
Tumblr, obviously, should be easy enough to add.
I need to give it a week or so before I update, though. I updated 2 days in a row, and I know people hate that (I know I do), but with the release of FF4 beta 2, allowing CSS3 transitions, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to add that to my widget.
I'll add 2 or 3 custom boxes (you'll have to specify the image location and URL and Name of service) and Tumblr to my next release.
Thanks!

I'll see what I can do!
July 30th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Thanks!

Yes… I'll add that to the next release.
July 30th, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Thank you!
And if you need, i make a dA button.

Tumblr has been included in 2.4.
I've also included 3 custom icon fields. You'll need to fill out the service name (e.g. Facebook) the url to the icon and the url to your profile.
Note that all three of the fields (for each custom icon) MUST be filled out in order for it to show up on your blog.

SlideShare has been added to 2.4
August 2nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm
DeviantArt has been included in 2.4

Hey bro. I intstalled this plugin early this past week and it was working great. Then I i saw the update and tried to update. When I did, it didn't work and the widget quit working. I uninstalled it and now when I try to install again, this is what I get:
Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/social-me...
Unpacking the package…
Installing the plugin…
Destination folder already exists. /public_html/wp-content/plugins/social-media-widget/
Plugin install failed.
What's going on here?
August 8th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
Then delete the folder and install it again.
Note that “uninstalling” or “disabling” a plugin doesn't delete it and all of its contents. It sounds to me like you just disabled the plugin, then went to plugins Add New, and tried to download and install it again.
SFTP into the server, delete the folder and start over.
Problem solved.
August 9th, 2010 at 1:03 am
didn't know about SFTP stuff but got cyberduck and deleted the folder. now i'm getting this message:
Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/social-me...
Unpacking the package…
Could not create directory. /public_html
I'm trying hard here, just not too familiar with all these things. the first time, it was so easy. i installed your plugin just like every other one i've used, no problem.

Nevermind. I found a way around. Thanks so much for your help and I'll be sure to pass along your great work!
